SANTA CAME TO SUCKLEY
Suckley Christmas Fair, held in the Village Hall on Saturday 28th of November,
brought together for the first time, Suckley School, Suckley Church, Suckley
Mothers and Toddlers and The Hill Trust, in one combined fun filled fund raising
effort.
There was something for all the family and all ages.
Beautiful Christmas gifts, crafts, cards, cakes and cartoons.
Pure Worcestershire, Leigh Sinton, Honey, plus beautifully crafted beeswax
ornaments, bric-a-brac and Tombola.
Teas, coffees, mince pies, tarts and soft drinks.
The children enjoyed lots of games, including, guessing who’s down the chimney,
the number of sweets in a jar, and sticking the nose on the reindeer whilst
blind fold, to mention just a few.
Santa arrived on time at 2:30pm, to be greeted by about fifty delighted
children, all going home happy with a book or other gift from Santa.
The Suckley Village Grand Xmas Raffle raised over £1000, with each of the four
organizations benefiting by £254.
For this we have to thank the donor of one Homemade Christmas Cake, Angela
Dewhurst, Legges of Bromyard, Kelsall’s Christmas Trees Storridge, Goodman’s
Geese, Holloways, Vanessa Green and Roots Farm Shop.
Thanks to all who sold tickets, purchased tickets, helped to make it happen and
to those who came, if we have missed anyone out, please forgive us and we thank
you.
See you all next year.
What’s happened to the White House?
THE RESTORATION STORY, FINAL CHAPTER
This talk by Lionel Persey turned out to be just as popular second time round.
Ticket sales closed midweek prior to the event, and we were still getting calls
for tickets within the last hour preceding the start time 7:0pm Saturday 5th
November.
Once again the hall was filled to capacity, and once again Mr Persey charmed the
audience telling the story of both the history of the White House, and the
restoration project, enhanced with many pictures of scenes before and after
restoration.
The event was held to raise funds for the Village Hall and Help for Heroes, the
latter being very much in people’s minds at this time, and the charity of choice
by the speaker and his family. We were particularly happy to welcome to the hall
a member of the armed forces injured in Afghanistan, Captain Kate Philp RA;
local Knightwick resident, accompanied by her parents. Peter Elcock, Group
Co-ordinator, Worcestershire, Help for Heroes also attended.
It had been agreed that all ticket sales be split evenly between the two
charities, the amount to be split came to £468, allowing a £234 share, in
addition to this, an on the door donation box exclusive to Help for Heroes
collected £212.74 making a grand total of £446.74 to go to Help for Heroes.
Thanks to all involved and to all who gave their support.
PART OF THE FURNITURE
I have so often thought that committee members become part of the furniture,
they are always there, dependable, useful and fit for purpose. Two years ago
when I became Chairman of The Hill Trust/Suckley Village Hall Committee, there
were people on the committee who fitted the above description, and I hoped that
they would stay for ever, for the benefit of their experience, and their
devotion to village life, and the village hall in particular.
However it was not to be, over the
course of the past two years four stalwarts of the committee have resigned, to
retire and take their ease, or to follow other interests, at least I hope that
is why they resigned, and not through something that I said. These four
individuals are to be acknowledged and thanked by the village and the village
hall committee in particular, for their contribution to the community and as
Trustees of The Hill Trust! Suckley Village Hall Committee. Arthur Bancroft,
John Harnmonds, Mamie Cain and last but not least Margaret Davies, public
recognition is long overdue, but none the less sincere. We thank you all, and
wish you well in your chosen form of retirement.
Tom Talbot, Chairman, The Hill
Trust.
JIM
LEWIS Talked about BEST MATE at the Village Hall

Fifty six people attended the
event, enjoying a supper of shepherd’s Pie and Vegetables, or Lasagne and Salad,
followed by a dessert of Treacle Sponge Pudding with Cream or Custard, rounded
off with Tea or Coffee. In his speech Jim Lewis told us of the time he sat with
his girl friend Jean, then only fourteen years old, and he aged just sixteen,
telling her of his dream, to one day marry her, buy her a house, that they would
live in, he would
buy for them a Jaguar car, and
some time in the future when he had enough money he would buy a race horse,
quite a dream for a young man earning thirty shillings (£1.50p) a week at the
time. The dream came true, including as we know, owning many horses, the most
famous being Best Mate, winner of three Cheltenham Gold Cups. All who attended
were privileged to hear his story, and to meet the man, a very warm, sincere,
and charming gentleman, highly successful in both business and in sport.
The evening raised £5l7, to be
split between two charities, St.Richard’s Hospice, of which Jim Lewis is a
patron, and the Hill Trust/Suckley Village Hall. The Hill Trust committee wish
to thank all those involved in the organization of the event, and all who
attended.
LOTTERY AWARD FOR
VILLAGE HALL
One year ago, Suckley Village Hall was awarded £5000 by Awards For All, the “Big
Lottery Fund”. The Hall’s management committee then matched the award through
fund raising events. During 2008 a willing band of volunteers, supported by
professional tradesmen when required, have made significant improvements to the
Hall, which celebrated its centenary in November.
Emergency
lighting and signage have been completely renewed and upgraded to meet current
regulations. Electrics too have been replaced and improved to meet modern
standards.
A completely new kitchen has been installed, including new heating and oven with
wall tiles courtesy of Carol and Cecil Luton of C&C tiles, Malvern. Ladies and
Gents Toilets have also undergone a partial transformation with the introduction
of Hot Air Hand Driers, new Water Heaters and Soap Dispensers and in the Ladies
there is a vanity unit with worktop for baby changing.
Damp proofing treatment has been installed where required,
repainting is being progressively undertaken and, finally, a new storage
cupboard with a racking system to house tables and chairs has been built, giving
more space in the main Hall area.
This much improved facility is now safer, more hygienic and
more user friendly. There is the potential to cater for 50 to 80 people, which
we trust will attract people looking for a party or meeting venue.
Thank you, Big Lottery Fund, and thank you all, who, have
helped in so many ways.
Tom
Talbot, Chairman, Hill Trust/Suckley Village Hall Committee.
