WOODLAND ROAD
Residents from Woodland Road attended the meeting to find out what progress,
if any, had been made regarding flood defences. The Parish Council heard
from Dist Cllr David Hughes that Andy McCausland had left MHDC. A
Consultant, Ben Fleming, had been appointed, together with Rex Thomas who
had previously worked for the Environment Agency. They would now be
reviewing the flood problems of the whole area, and Dist Cllr David Hughes
would be pressing for Woodland Road to be at the top of the Agenda. The
Council and residents expressed their frustration that over a year had gone
by, and we were no nearer to any real action taking place. Dist Cllr Hughes
confirmed that the original plans from Andy McCausland would form the basis
of the next plan, and he was trying to get this through under the auspices
of the MHDC budget. However, he had approached Festival Housing about
funding, but no definite amount could be agreed until all costings had taken
place. The Council discussed the possibility of a temporary measure, as
residents reported that during recent rainstorms water would have entered
their homes if they had not dug a ditch themselves to divert the water. Dist
Cllr Hughes felt that the Council should give the new appointees time to get
to grips with the problem, and stressed the importance of finding the right
long term technical solution. It was agreed that a meeting should be
arranged in the near future with District and Parish Councillors, the residents
and the new Consultants.
FLOOD SURVEY
Malvern Hills District Council was now undertaking a local survey of flood
damage, water flows and levels etc. from the July 07 flooding, and the
Parish Council was being asked to mark up parish maps accordingly. Parish
Councillors would be visiting parishioners affected by the 07 floods to make
sure the information was as accurate as possible.
HIGHWAYS & BYWAYS
The Council keep a continuous eye on highways and byways problems including
verge encroachments, potholes, drainage and general maintenance of the local
roads and lanes. The Council was pleased to hear that the signs for Longley
Green had now finally been replaced. However, it was agreed that a further
small sign stating "In the Parish of Suckley" be added, otherwise visitors
to the area would not realize they were in Suckley. |
AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Nigel Potter from Community First put forward a presentation to
the Council relating to affordable housing in Suckley. This followed on from
his first meeting with the Council in January 2008 and a site visit in March
2008. Although no specific sites had been agreed upon he felt that the next
step should be a Housing Needs Survey which would be undertaken by Community
First. After a lengthy discussion. the Council agreed to consider the
proposal for a Survey.
MAP BOARD
The Clerk reported that she had not yet received costings for signing to the
map board. She had sent the views of the Council regarding the location of
the signs to Paul Stevenson at Traffic Management, Worcs Co Council and he
had agreed with these. Dist Cllr A Warburton was hoping to get some funding
for these signs from MHDC.
SUCKLEY POST OFFICE
The Council had held a special meeting on 4th August to discuss the best
way to start a campaign should the decision be made to close the Post Office
at Suckley. Using the guidance notes from the Association of Local Councils,
the first step was to draw up local views and statistics to present to Post
Office Limited. The Clerk reported that there had been a huge response to
the questionnaires sent out around the parish by the Council, which clearly
demonstrated the depth of feeling about the importance of the Post Office to
village life. Fortunately, the Post Office had been spared and would remain
open for the foreseeable future.
Date of the next Parish Council
Meeting is 7.00 pm in Suckley Village Hall on Monday 10th November
2008.
There is always time at the
beginning of the meeting for parishioners to make a short address to the
Councillors for discussion in the meeting.
