Suckley Primary School - Michaelmas Fayre

Saturday 27th September 2008

Visitors enjoyed a sunny, leisurely day at Suckley Friends Association's third annual Michaelmas Fayre with stalls and games for all.  Thanks to the generous support of visitors, stall-holders and parents, the school raised close to £1000 - a remarkable achievement for a rural school with only 47 pupils.  This money will go towards school outings and equipment to make learning fun.

The highlight of the day for many visitors was seeing the Foucault's Pendulum in action.  Alfrick's Bruce Roscoe suspended a 19.5kg lead weight 9.4 metres from the hatch in Suckley Church's newly renovated clock tower and demonstrated to the amazement of all how much the earth turned underneath it in the few hours the fayre was on.  By 2pm - three hours into the show - you could see quite clearly that the church had turned more than 30 degrees. At our latitude the earth turns 11.5 degrees per hour.

In previous years, the fayre has included a scarecrow competition.  This year it was replaced with angel sculptures in any medium.  There was a great selection of entries.  Headmistress Miss Sarah James said: "I am extremely impressed with the inventiveness everyone has shown in the angel sculptures.  What creative people we have in Suckley!  Angels made from plant pots, hay, pine cones, even meringues... brilliant ideas"
