As it Happened
Thursday 20th March
The boys left Malvern approx
1.30pm for Lands End, they are travelling down
in a camper van, which has been kindly donated for the Tour by good samaritans Steve and Becky Bishop after reading our plea in the Worcester
News this Monday. The Worcester couple's son was saved by County Air
Ambulance, so they kindly offered to help by loaning their Camper and
Steve to drive.
Day 1 - Friday 21st March
First stage completed successfully!
Hard going against the wind across Bodmin Moor and driving rain towards the end,
punctures for Andy at 40 miles and Julian at 90 miles.
Day 2 - Saturday 22nd March
Arrived safely in Weston
Super Mare no incidents to report today just very hard going hilly and very
windy. All very tired but in good spirits and ready for day 3 hopefully ending in Worcester!
Day 3 - Sunday 23rd March
Left Weston at 6am, better
day today, still windy but not as hilly as the last two days. Arrived at The
Royal Oak Leigh Sinton around 2pm. (Good reception committee thanks to everyone
who made it.) The boys will spend the rest of today enjoying home comforts
before restarting their journey from Leigh Sinton at 8am tomorrow.
Day 4 - Monday 24th March
Traumatic day today -
the support vehicle and driver have returned home as the riders were approaching
Chester, today's destination. This has meant that Mike has had to drop out of
the ride and take over the role of support driver in his own vehicle. Leaving
just Andy and Julian to complete the remainder of the ride.
Tackling the route from South to North is supposed to give the benefit of
following winds but for the 4th day running they have been riding into the wind
- Andy is suffering from a sore backside but otherwise he and Julian are in good
shape. and ready for an early start on day five tomorrow.
Day 5 - Tuesday 25th March
The two remaining riders
Andy and Julian left Chester at 7 am and travelled on some less hilly roads
today making good time and arriving in Lancaster around 4pm. Mike returned with
his support vehicle early this morning and caught up with the riders around
Wigan. The weather
today was better with less wind and very little rain, negotiating the centres of
Wigan, Warrington and Preston was a little nerve racking but having passed
halfway everyone is in good spirits despite the aches and pains!
Day 6 - Wednesday 26th March
Good day today hard slog
along the A6 over Shap fell but the weather was kind until later in the day.
Snow visible on the lakeland hills in the distance, heavy rain for the last 20
miles into Lockerbie, today's destination. Both riders now beginning to
understand the meaning of "saddle sore" but with the length of England behind
them they are looking forward to the "scenic ride" through Scotland!
Day 7 - Thursday 27th
March
Update by phone from
Julian 2pm
they are very tired - only the "good cause" and their sense of humour is keeping
them going!
Update 8:30pm - sounds like the boys hit the "barrier" today the first 30 miles
from Lockerbie was all uphill and took it's toll. However, after a hearty lunch
sheer willpower took over and they managed the longest leg of the journey so
far, around 120 miles in total, ending the day in the dark on the banks of Loch
Lomond. The views from the Erskine bridge across the Clyde (photos to follow)
were definitely the highlight of the day. Julian and Andy are both looking
forward to circumnavigating Ben Nevis tomorrow and hoping that the weather
forecast is wrong!
Day 8 - Friday 28th March
Started the day in heavy
snow leaving the digs at 6am, but 2 hours later it stopped. Although the
visibility was hampered by the weather the highlands looked good with a covering
of snow. Very hard going for the first part of Glencoe but the downhill run on
the other side was much easier! Ben Nevis was obscured by cloud but impressive
none the less and will feature in the picture gallery when they return.
Both the riders were feeling more positive today after yesterday's "down" and
put in another gruelling 12 hour day to cover around 110 miles and finish at the
southern end of Loch Ness. They are hoping to have another big push tomorrow and
hopefully leave around 60 miles for the final day on Sunday.
Day 9 - Saturday 29th March
Another cracking day,
covering more than 100 miles again, all looking forward to the final day
tomorrow. Spending the night in Helmsdale which is less than 60 miles from John
o'Groats so hopefully there for lunchtime tomorrow well ahead of schedule. Aches
and pains still there but don't seem as bad so close to the finish, even the
heavy rain was bearable. BBC Radio Hereford & Worcester have been in touch
throughout the day and broadcasting reports of the boys progress and intend to
broadcast a live interview at 07:30hrs on Monday morning.
12:30 SUNDAY 30TH
MARCH
Mission Accomplished
Well done Andy & Julian
and thanks to Mike for taking over the support role
Marvellous conditions
for the last leg dry and warm with some sunshine. the team arrived in John
O'Groats around 12:30, unfortunately the sign which points to Lands End was
missing and the guy who looks after it was on holiday - what a way to finish!
However the boys managed to improvise as you will see when the pictures arrive
next week. Keep checking!!
Everyone very pleased to have finished and looking forward to getting home and a
few days well-earned relaxation.
Congratulations to again to everyone involved.
What an achievement!!
